I like to think that the Automatons, who are technological relics of an ancient age of human advancement, are the result of one of the previous Chief Gods trying to take a shortcut like that. "Lets just make a few really powerful species, that'll keep the humans from getting ahead!". Humanity then defeats them and advances to the point where the CG panics and sends some really nasty stuff, perhaps that's where the chaos species were first unleashed upon the world.
I dunno there's alot of ways you can take it, and its as deep or shallow as you personally prefer to take it.
