Update that nobody asked for or cares about:
Turns out the problem wasn't Wine or ITHVNR after all but rather the visual novel I was trying to hook. I just tried hooking a different VN and everything works perfectly.

I'm going to have to test it some more since this could just be a fluke where it only works with this one specific VN and no others, but I'm really hoping that's not the case. There are a bunch of newer VNs which I've been wanting to play which just won't run on my VM, so I might at long last be able to play them now. Finally, over a year after I started learning Japanese I can read something which isn't in an 800x600 window!
