It was a week after the war ended, and Miyao sat in his room. He was alone, as always. It wasn't like he wanted anyone else around him, anyway. At least not now.
As he thought back to the events from last week, he couldn't help but feel bad for Lingji. He had felt so helpless when it happened. But then again, he didn't really have much choice. His father controlled everything about him, including the way his body worked.
But if there was one thing that Miyao could say, it was that he hated his father. And he knew for sure that he'd never forgive him for taking away Lingji. As he continued to think about his fallen comrade, he tried his best to drown out the voice of his father.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in," he said flatly.
A young man walked into his room, dressed in a suit. Miyao's eyes widened when he saw him. The man had short brown hair, and wore glasses with thick black frames. He also wore a lab coat over his clothes, and had a small pistol on his hip.
"Oh, Mr. Mitake? I'm sorry to bother you, but..." the man started to explain.
Miyao interrupted him. "What is it?"
"I just wanted to congratulate you on your victory." The young man smiled politely.
Miyao replied with anger. "Victory? What victory!? My friend died because of this! And all thanks to my own damn dad!"
The man took a step forward. "Mr. Mitake, I understand how you must feel right now. Believe me, I've been through something similar before. But unfortunately, you can't change history, or erase it altogether. All you can do is accept the cards that fate deals you, and move on from them."
He continued with a smile. "In other words, you cannot change what has already happened, so all you can do is focus on what's to come. And there are many things you need to focus on, starting with your next mission."
Miyao stared at the man angrily. He turned his attention back to the floor, and shook his head.
"Fine, whatever. Just go. Leave me alone."
The man nodded, and walked out the door.
Miyao sat in silence, thinking about the conversation he just had. For some reason, he felt like he should've told the man off. Something about the man made him want to lash out at him, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
He stood up, went to the window, and looked outside. There were so many people walking around; they were all going about their daily lives.
At that moment, he realized something. He had lived his entire life under the belief that he was nothing more than a pawn on a board. That the only purpose he served was to fight. To kill.
And now that he thought about it, that was exactly what he had done. He killed Lingji. He let Lingji die. And he would probably do it again.
If he was a pawn on the board, then what was his destiny? What was he supposed to do?
Miyao sighed, and returned to his bed. He laid down, and closed his eyes.
'Damn it... what am I even doing?'
He thought to himself, as he drifted off to sleep.
