They show that they're horrible places to live in and some character will always give a big speech about how there's no future for humanity here, but then they'll also always throw in a child character you're supposed to care about every chapter so you feel bad for killing the lostbelt.

Honestly LB1 was the only good one because it established the formula they'd keep on rehashing.
