Well, a year and some months on from starting reading and I tried to use Anki again but I still can't get on with it. Made a few attempts but none lasted more than a week before something or other about it bothered me and made me delete my deck and start from scratch.

Deciding to continue down the "fuck Anki" route for now, but with the change that I'm going to make the effort to switch to Japanese dictionaries and manually look everything up (so "goodbye pop-up dictionary, hello qolibri"). I'm going to follow the process Matt describes (minus the Anki part) in his monolingual transition video where you look up the initial unknown word you encounter in your input using the J-J dictionary, then look up any unknown words from the J-J dictionary definition in the J-E dictionary.

Hopefully all this will help to solve my slow vocabulary growth woes. Assuming Moogy isn't full of shit, there should be no reason I can't build up a good vocabulary without using Anki so long as I stop being lazy about the way I look up words.
