Maximilian Gerber

He is the ghost of a Jesuit scientist who never achieved his goal in life, which was to prove that there was a 12th planet circulating the Sun (Vulcan).
Not accomplishing his goal left his ghost haunting an observatory atop a mountain somewhere in Japan. For centuries the locals feared his ghost, but after the 19th Century they began to grow disillusioned.
Fearing that he's doomed to disappear, he prayed to the Christian God (if we suppose that most gods exist in Touhouverse) that he would be let to continue his work. Surprisingly, God answered to his prayers. Angel Gabriel and Saint Ignatius, the patron saint of Jesuits, appeared before him and sent him to Gensokyo for a mission to convert the locals, and to continue his work in uncovering the secrets of God's celestial work.

His story begins, when one night he finally arrives to Gensokyo. When investigating the area, he encounters problems, which will require more people than he imagined. Firstly, in order to match rival religious organisations, he would need to establish a HQ and gain even some possible followers. Secondly, there is a problem with building an observatory. The highest mountain in Gensokyo is the Yokai Mountain, which already not only houses a Shinto shrine, but it is also the home of the Tengu. Thirdly, the only possible person able to help him in his research is a witch residing in the Scarlet Devil Mansion. And if her witchness was not a downside already, she serves a vampire. Finally, there seems to be at least four mysterious figures watching his every move. One moves like a cat, the second has tails like a fox, and then there are the two who sometimes can be seen dancing in the corner of his eye.
The biggest problem, however, is Maximilian himself. Though he is an mathematical genius, and a great astronomer, he is not the best for his given job. He always lost debates in his life, he did very little theological work, and he has no combat experience. He also needs to get over some of his attitudes towards "heretics", "false gods" and "demons".
However, Maximilian has the great ability to foretell coming events by looking at stars, and utilizing that could fulfill some of his objectives.
