I know where you are trying to get at, but I think you are being a bit misjudgemental because of the fact the box is on 100% opacity. Just to take an example of the latest widescreen VN I read(and yes, I do read them) that wasn't Alternative, take a look at ImoPara's text box. There are a bunch of gradients, shapes and glows, but that's barely noticeable when the opacity is lowered down.
I figured I wouldn't have to say this again, but the opacity of the box is controlled via code, no point of me on designing it with any in it. That being said, thanks for the criticism.
