I think the Church basement scene near the end of Fate does a fantastic job of showing Saber's conflict and how Shirou's relates to it. But yeah, if you zone out during long exposition you'd end up missing it.
Not sure what you're referring to as immortality/stagnation, in GO shit it's pretty cookie cutter and simple. He's used it as really cool background for villains like Roa and Zouken though.

I don't think you're dumb, in any case. Sometimes I'm really into a VN, and can perfectly absorb every line of dialogue and its meaning. Other times I'm more impatient, or it hasn't done a good job of grabbing me, so I'm just rushing to the next bit of exciting content. Happens with everyone.
