That's old and bad advice, you should never submerge your fumo. There's always a risk of her getting moldy inside.
Follow pic related instead.

Wash her like you would with delicate fabrics. Another thing is keep a clean microfiber cloth around to dust her every now and again. Prevention is the best thing for keeping her clean and microfiber is very good at grabbing dust, even better if you give it a static charge. I'd avoid lint rollers or any adhesive based removers for the reason that it takes everything, not just dust and hair so you'll get pulled fibers or fraying before too long; it's especially bad for very delicate parts like Yuyuko's veil. If you're handling her often try to be hygenic yourself since skin oils and flakes will permeate into her fabric over time and that's something you need a wash to get out.

You can only protect them by keeping them inside a shrine when not using them, but it's not worth it, they won't be able to breathe that way.
You can clean them by washing them once every few months, follow pic related.

Keep that for another board.

No baths, just hand washing and a very soft toothbrush. Pic related has worked fine for me.

I would never throw them in the washer. I still haven't cleaned my fumos I got a few months ago and I really should do it soon, but when I do I will post plush cleaning anon's advice.
