You could just as easily argue that it served a purpose by making the viewer feel uncomfortable. and highlighting how far gone Satoko was emotionally at that point. If Ryukishi just wanted to have a shot of her naked, then he could've used the sprite during the bath scene as well. But he specifically held off until that ne specific moment in the story, because that's when it had a purpose.
