Tend to prefer the stranger-than-fiction interpretation where Mio, like Saburo, got her distinguishing mark after surviving getting shot through the head.

He was quite fortunate. Lost nearly half his brains and didn't even lose a single motor function. Neuroplasticity sure is wonderful.

Mio is pretty much an entirely original character. Somewhat disappointingly, she doesn't share a single trait with her supposed basis.

Well, there're always the eye. But I seriously doubt Mio has at any time been shot through the head and lived.
