Alright anon, I'm going to teach you a lesson now, so listen carefully. In TW, abilities increase like so:
SOURCE -> PALAM -> PALAMLV -> JUEL -> ABL.
When you execute a commend, SOURCE values increase. Those are the numbers you see at the top, like affection and joy. SOURCE values are immediately converted through fancy math into PALAMs (parameters). We can see our PALAMs below. Those PALAMs contribute towards your PALAMLV, which shown by the little bars above a character when you're in the same room with them. At the end of the day, you gain a certain amount of JUEL (Gems) based on each PARAMLV, and those contribute towards leveling up your ABLs. You can see your progress to the next ABL level by hovering over it with your mouse in the character menu.
We can ignore SOURCEs, they don't really matter. The important part is looking at the parameters you're gaining, and prioritize hitting higher PALAMLVs since gem gain scales exponentially with them. If we look at our image, Favor (Care) corresponds to Intimacy and Desire corresponds to Lust. So watch your training messages to see what commands are giving what, and use the abilities menu to see how close you are to raising your girl's intimacy level.
The reason it's so confusing is because Era games were originally slave trainers and gems were a currency, so you'd spend gems to level up different abilities and buy things like pain and submission marks. TW just handles this all automatically so some of the steps in the process which the player needed to manage aren't really relevant anymore.
