It has nothing to do with the species. "Species" is a completely arbitrary word, it doesn't have an objective meaning. Living organisms want to live, as all currently living organisms are the product of other living organisms who had a genetic predisposition to surviving. If they didn't want to live, they didn't, and they didn't pass on their genes to have descendants alive today. But we're not immortal and we can't clone ourselves, which might be for the better - maybe - as our environments change over time and which genes are good today might not be good tomorrow. So, instead, we reproduce our genes mixed with a mate (i.e. a set of genes we find ideal to reproduce) and, on average, the best kids we reproduce will survive. "Best" meaning "as best as nature/the sexes believe is best for the environment." Ask the dodo if it selected the best genes it could.
