I consider myself a hobbyist. If exclusively all I did was watch/read anime, read manga, play jrpg's and visual novels, and work, the I'd consider myself legitimately an otaku. Though I use the word as more of a shortcut word in conversation with acquaintances if they even have knowledge of what an otaku even is:

-"describe yourself, anon?"
-"I'm an otaku skating metalhead that likes science, nature and DnD, in recovery from drug addiction"
-"whats an otaku? and did you say addiction?"
