And yeah, I'm talking about the spread of the AO more than its outright darkness.
Once thing I'm suddenly realizing from "true" AO (none of that fake videogame BS) is that it can be very subtle, and a lot of it comes down to bounce light being occluded.
Top picture is your exact setup, skylight + sunlight that magically doesn't bounce any light. And the AO is barely noticeable. But introduce bounce light and the effect of "occlusion" gets a lot stronger.
