It may not work as well in Japan, but a lot of older people will feel sorry for you and give you some food or a bit of money if they see that you're a "fellow" Christian, and if you know a bit about the faith, you can usually go to a church and get help. I'm assuming you'll need food that you don't have at some point if this is your first time travelling for a long time on your own and you don't have much money. Think about the towel in the Hitchhiker's Guide, but real. And if you ever get depressed to the point of suicide, you might be able to find faith for a long enough time to get your bearings.
