Kitano's directorial debut is by far my favorite of his and one of my most re-watched films. possibly the most deliriously nihilistic cop flick I've seen. It's grim and single-minded, a brutal battle of hideous assholes, in his iconic elegant, laconic style. The climax is one of the bleakest things I've ever seen in film. Potent, with a score that alternates between haunting urban jazz and Mark Mothersbaugh's Rugrats' BGM. Fun fact, it was originally to be a Fukasaku Kinji action comedy but he backed out and Kitano took over, removed all the comedy & blew our minds with the result.
