My own beliefs tended more towards ghosts/spirits/shadow people possessing people. In the evenings I used to go outside on my own to perform rituals that would get rid of the bad spirits. There were also some friendly spirits around who were my friends. My own Sakutaro has been with me my whole life (likewise a gift from my mother) and Umineko made me very grateful that I've never been separated from him.
