That sounds about right. People live by all sorts of different ideas of things, which mostly depend on other ideas, not on real things, but that's just because the mind is full of ideas, not real things. Hardness is no more of an arbitrary concept than velocity. Nipponjins call the colour of the sky 青, which we English-speakers call blue, but they also call seaweed and traffic lights 青, even though we'd call them green, yet any non-colour blind person could tell that those three objects (or phenomena, properly speaking) have distinct shades.
