because they have pretty much always sounded and looked similar, and that's carried through into the modern alphabet

What I'm confused about is that there's literally a one stroke difference between the two, but they don't sound similar, nor (form what I can understand offa wikipedia) did they even come from the same kanji? Did they just end up looking the same as they were simplified over time? Usually characters looking the same implies some sort of connection between them.
