There's still a difference that can't be accounted for just by MGE coming down off a popularity boom. We've still got new waifufags popping up now and then, but I don't think we've got a single rapecatfag.

While I was exaggerating a bit when I said it's the lack of big meaty paws that caused their lack of popularity, I think it's a big part of a larger issue. The issue being that Ocelomehs just... do not visually match how they're supposed to act.
Look at them, Ocelomehs are positively dainty in comparison to the design of the Hellhound that just screams "rape," and those tiny digits are a significant factor in it. Even if the profile says they're supposed to be max-dominant, I think that most people just don't take it seriously on a subconcious level, and it's all in the design.
