I feel like if they gain sentience, specific cultures would treat them differently. 'Murrika and most of the Anglosphere would do their best to keep them down because of their closeted hate over things that are cute and thinly veiled butthurt superiority complex. Asian cultures may be more receptive of them and treat them like how the Indians do with cows or like Egyptians back then with their own feline gods.
