I say it's just as important. Levels helps your HP and MP totals as well as giving you very helpful bonus points to raise skills. The helpfulness of these bonus points is greatly magnified once you reach periods of very quick leveling in the game like I'm currently going through. Raising stats is important but don't neglect your levels or skills either. Lots of walls people encounter in the game can be solved if all three are properly taken care of and not allowed to be skimped on. Skill/Spell levels, attributes, and player level.
