It's all Maria. Kyrie had a second miscarriage after her marriage with Rudolf. Battler still left because he disliked Rudolf remarriage anyway.
During the last year before the Massacre, Rosa lost custody of Maria and had to send her with family members, she desesperately send her with Rudolf, her real biological father.
Maria actually was happy there, calling herself Ange as Kyrie basically lived her fantasies using her to play the role of a wholesome mother to Rudolf.
Battler visits and he actually befriends Maria, thus leading to all the scenes with Ange.
Cue the Massacre. Everyone except Eva die. Maria is also "killed" when Kyrie admits just lying about loving her. Thats why her death isn't show onscreen unlike George 's or even Jessica. It was the death of the Maria persona, not the human.
