I don't think that it's shinier than what it used to be. I think that he's simply adding more detail and it's tricking the mind into thinking that it is.
What's really bothering me is how her hair is much darker (and a bit blue-er) and eyes more brown than red. It shames me to say that as much as I love her I didn't recognize her through those differences.
