Their small hangars were a serious issue. Some RN fetishists try to wave it away or pretend deck parks fixed it but that isn't the case. Small squadrons meant weaker CAP, and strike groups that were unable to saturate enemy air defenses with numbers leading to higher losses.

People criticizing bong CVs usually get it wrong by focusing on the armoured flight deck though. Armoured flight decks were definitely beneficial and probably worth the trade off of extra weight. The problem with the RN CV designs was the side armour on their hangars. That was completely fucking useless and caused all the same problems as armoured decks but worse.
