For starters it's episodic and fairly succinct and to the point unlike some of R07's other stuff that drags on sometimes. It's a high school setting and we have all read stories of bullies before but Higanbana shines because the stories are fairly brutal. Yet, as often with his works, some moments of hope and overcoming tragedy shine through the darkness. Other times shit just stays awful or gets worse, so you get a change of pace pretty often. I'm a huge fan of the music. It also references Higurashi and Umineko with its characters and their traits, so it's a treat if you're familiar with his other stuff. What I love about it most is the underbelly of the surface school stuff: this society of Youkai with their own rules and culture. It's really cool learning about their different personalities and abilities. There are even some neat shonen style fights between them. Also, here is a huge spoiler I don't recommend scrolling over but I fucking loved this part Higanbana throws a fucking BUS full of students off a fucking cliff. I think only the driver survives. Holy shit.. Marie and Higanbana's relationship is precious. The final chapter is actually brilliant and beautiful.

It's underrated. I sincerely wish more people read it.

Does anyone play MtG Commander with weaboo rethemed commanders? Right now I'm working a B/W Necropotence deck with Ghost Council of Orzhova as Higanbana from the 07th Expansion VN, and a R deck with Adamaro, First to Desire as Mammon from Umineko.
