He was a unique lead for sure. I love how by all means him constantly flip-flopping should be annoying as hell, but thanks to the writing doubling down on him being intentionally a stupid pain in the ass it becomes a fun back and forth of warm anticipation for when he'd finally give in for good. Also when he started getting pissy about food my sides just went into orbit. The voice acting for him was just great too, it easily shot to the top of my favorite kimuryo roles.
I don't think I'd consider Lapis a retard-chan case. Her not being human excused the lack of human common sense and fit with the setting and other than that she's pretty perceptive, down to earth and aware of her own short comings. Maybe a bit inconsistent and occasionally love blind at worst. Then again I'm lenient on MCs in general as long as they feel like they're written as their own character and she ticked that box. Helps that she's surrounded by guys with actual brain damage so naturally looks good in comparison. Mitsuki spent like 3/4ths of the route still thinking the whole school hated him, I worry for him.
Also it's absolutely criminal there is no Jasper route.
