｢進級がかかっている｣

Can someone explain what 進級 is? Jisho says "promotion (school, military, etc.)" but it doesn't really make sense in context. Basically one character states they have to go to school the next day because they have a test, then they say this line:

｢俺は進級がかかっている…ケンカしすぎちゃった。｣

"[Line in question]...I got into too many fights."
