Well it seems I'll have to show some support for Hatate here.

I don't like the tengu.

Now before you get all on my ass about nostalgia or whatever, I do like Touhou, I do like kappa, I do like most of the new additions. I don't like the crow tengu-white wolf tengu split that's been forced where it doesn't belong (Double Spoiler), but that's something for another time.

See, my problem with the tengu is that they're completely out of place. I get that Touhou is ultimately derived from Eastern folklore and mythology, and that ZUN created the modern views of youkai, and so they all, well, get together well. Humans too.

But ever since then, ZUN keeps trying to make new races for stuff since the first nine Touhou games (eight, since many discount Tasofro's Immaterial and Missing Power) came out. Tell me a Touhou game that uses witches and shrine maidens without the other. Only Aya really seems to be consistent.

Tengu are Touhou-enough, I guess, but they can't ever be mistaken for a race of Gensokyo, unlike oni and kappa. And while Touhou is by no means faithful to the original myths, tengu just take it to another level.
