(I was going to post this in the other meiling thread, but it got removed so I guess I'll just have to do it here)
In my headcanon, Meiling is from a village of human martial artists. She was a prodigy beyond compare, even among a village filled with martial artist prodigies. She was so good, and obtained such a mastery of ki, she eventually surpassed her own humanity and became a youkai. Similar to how a magician can use magic to surpass their own humanity. Despite this happening long ago, she still remembers and honors her upbringing. This is one of the reasons why, by youkai standards, she is such a nice and friendly person. But it's also why she is still single. Since, though her village was very gender equal for the time, there was still one rule all girls were taught to follow: They will not give their body to any man who cannot best them in a duel.

So far, no man has been found that is capable of doing so. Still, she dreams of the day that it happens. The day when she is beaten in honorable one in one combat, and can finally give herself to the victor as his price. It's why she's so eager to let villagers test their strength on her(Which is apparently a thing according to PMISS). She hopes that one of them can grow enough in power to defeat her. It also means that, despite her attitude, she's very much a blushing virginial maiden when it comes to matters to love. Though she would almost certainly be very eager to serve and wants to become a mother as soon as possible.
