I wasn't really sure what to do here. I went riichi 5s, but I knew that this was a quite weak wait in terms of tile number (5 discarded -> 3 tiles left). On the other hand, with 3s pon, 1s was going to come out pretty much guaranteed if someone got it, and 4s might also seem a bit safer with 3s being ponned. On the other hand, by riichiing, I immediately fall a placement if someone else gets out before me.

There was a chance of getting over 30k with ippatsu or ura, but I probably should have valued the 1000 points of the riichi stick more than that slim chance. Especially coupled with the fact that those 1000 points are helping whoever else might agari first reach 30k.

Of course, this is 結果論 and you can argue either ways, but this decision led to a very gay last place, and it makes me sad.

So IMO, on tenhou, dama 5s seems like the best choice. Betaori is also an option. If I had my kagaku suru mahjong book with me I'd calculate the worth of pushing my hand, but from a glance, I think discarding 5s dama is a good balanced choice.
