Kamikaze Explorer doesn't run in Wine, or at least not the trial (full game torrent hasn't finished yet).
Looks like I'll have to dig out the Windows machine.
Does it at least run on English Windows versions or do I need a Japanese edition?

hmmm, just thought maybe there could be a cool parallel between gunshots and the crash of thunder and flash of lightning ... the thick smell of burned powder hanging in the air, and the rather unpleasant (and messy) effects / terminal ballistics of a flintlock pistol shot to the head.

I do like the meat shield idea though, turning the dead against the living, using their husks as vessels for magic. It sounds almost like Soul Reaver, a little. Turn the dead into demonic monstrosities, brotherhood of vampire hunters and all that.
