After a year that started in the low 1200s, I finally managed to make my way back to 1500 ish and just broke my own barrier and ranked up.

You don't need a Japanese set per se to play riichi. Any Chinese or even American set will have the tiles needed (1-9 in all suits plus winds/honors). That alone is all you really need for a nashi nashi game.

Tenbou sticks can be ordered separately, but honestly 3bux worth of coins will work just as well. You can use the flower/season/joker tiles as replacements for the red fives if needed.

The only thing really missing is the sense of authenticity you get from playing with real Japanese tiles.
