(Appropriate image attached.) There is a good reason for why Marie's new clothes are the way they are, and this is explained in the first chapter. She only wears these clothes in certain parts of the story — for most of the time, she wears the same outfit that she wore in The First Night.

Higanbana is not a mystery story. I know some people insist that the supernatural events that occur in the story are caused by humans, but those people are reading too much into it. Higanbana is actually fantasy.

As for horror, it certainly has scary/creepy vibes. It's hard for me to say how it compares to Higurashi, since the two stories evoke slightly different styles of horror, but Higanbana certainly has its fair share of grisly moments.
