Sup /jp/,

Is the whole "confession" thing real, or is it just something that happens in anime/manga?
The entire concept seems kind of ridiculous and counter-intuitive to building a serious relationship; you hide in the brush while you watch someone you think you like, and then spring a confession of undying love on them.

Help me understand this.
