The Moriya Shrine was a picture of serenity. Aya couldn’t see a single soul at the grounds. Without the hustle and bustle of religion mixing with commerce, the tengu could appreciate how the goddesses built their shrine. The land itself was molded to guide the wildlife away from human footpaths, allowing both to coexist. For foreigners, they adapted well to the mountain. Since the paths were empty, That had to mean Sanae was out gathering faith in the Village. Now Aya only had to face the wrath of two goddesses.

As she flew closer to the Moriya Shrine, Aya could feel the presence of divinity. Considering who lived here, the tengu had two options: If it were Kanako, she’d have the disadvantage coming by air. If it were Suwako, she’d better not set foot on the ground. If both of them were here, she was fucked either way. Still, she had to choose one approach. Between smacking one in the face and spreading porn of the other, which goddess would be angrier at her?

Aya landed at the foot of the steps to the Moriya Shrine. She was immediately swallowed by the earth without leaving a trace of her existence behind.

… She could feel something on her nose. When she tried to wipe it off, the tengu realized her arms were pinned to her side. Up to her neck, her entire body was pressed by tightly-packed dirt. It was even wedged under her fingernails. Opening her eyes, the tengu noticed rippling waters surrounded by wooden pillars. It would have been a spiritually-enriching sight, had she not been rendered immobile. To her right, she heard the shutter of her camera. Straining her neck, Aya could barely glimpse the goddess’ fluttering purple dress.

“So Kasen’s the one that’s been causing trouble for us, eh? What a shame. It’s always the last person you’d suspect.” Suwako slowly circled the tengu, holding a rolled-up paper in her right hand and Aya’s camera in her left, documenting her imprisonment from every angle she could get. “Almost makes you wonder who else could turn on you.”

With the little freedom she had, Aya turned her head down in a show of veneration. “Oh great, honorable and forgiving Suwako-sama, I harbor no intentions to destroy the Moriya Shrine! It was just a misunderstanding! Happenstance! A fluke!”

Her shoot over, Suwako sat down in front of Aya with a devilish grin plastered on her face. An old evil ruminated beneath her childish mask. “Well, you know what they say: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice?” The goddess unfurled the paper into a very familiar doujinshi featuring Kanako on the front. “Shame on me.”

“I’ve never seen that doujin before in my life! I had no idea people could see the holy and ultimate Kanako-sama in such a lewd and unsavory light! How dare they suggest you would ever aid in the entrapment of an innocent man to fulfill the material desires of a lonely goddess!”

Unable to contain herself, Suwako fell to the ground laughing. “Ahahahaha! Even when you’re buried to your neck and lying out your ass you hit the nail on head! She’s been reading this thing every night since she took it from Sanae. If Yukari didn’t already have him, Kanako would have him tied up herself!” Under the cool breeze, infused with the lake’s effervescence, Aya was sweating bullets. Kanako knew the contents of the doujinshi.

“A-and is Kanako here right now?” A rumbling came from underneath Aya. Before she could realize it, the earth around her neck opened up and the soil surrounding her limbs pushed her out of the ground. Her outfit was still stained with a layer of dirt.

“Eh, calm down already. Kanako is out dealing with the kappa. Besides, it’d be poor form to kill you after you and that girl stuck out your necks to help us out. Even worse to kill ya’ while you’re still carrying. Congratulations, by the way! Make sure to drop by sometime to pray for a safe delivery.” Extending an arm out, Suwako waited for one of her trained mishaguji to bring her a bottle of sake. It seemed quite fancy. “Now, what brings ya’ to the this ol’ shrine?”

Without the imminent threat of death in her mind, Aya calmed down and assessed her situation. She knew Okina’s backdoors around the Moriya shrine were far away enough from here that she could talk to Suwako without worry. Perhaps Suwako knew that too. Now, how to approach the topic… well, the last time she petitioned a goddess, the direct method worked best.

Mustering her courage, the tengu took a polite tone. “How much do you trust Okina?”

Suwako followed up quickly. “So it’s treachery, huh?” Aya’s blood went cold as the earth goddess chugged down her booze.

“Well? Get on with it. We don’t have all day.”
