Have you seen the [old] news? Lightning is overpowered in this game too.

But yeah, the game retains most of its glory, and card farming is pretty easy. Unlike FF8, where there was an actual sidestory for the minigame, the app has none.

PvP is in real time, but I don't know if trade rules apply since I've lost all of my battles, but never had a card taken.
