Please take into account this graphical representation of the nature of the border as presented in SaBND.

It's not just the shrine, Gensokyo in its entirety seems to occupy the same space as (a portion of) the outside world. What separates them is not a physical barrier. It's a conceptual one.

It's not like that. Gensokyo is in Japan (just like, say, Moon Capital is on the moon). Some call it a pocket dimension, but the border actually just separates reality from myth, common sense from all things supernatural. The geography and landmarks are the same in both worlds. It's probably best to call it an alternative reality.

You see nothing.

There are many things that reside on the border (Fairies' new tree home, for example) and you can just go past it, circle it, etc. and see nothing out of ordinary.

Unless you're someone like Yukari who knows what to look for.
