Buildup of romance doesn't even really happen with longer routes. Most moege with long routes still have the first lewd scene 20 minutes in. The rest is boring shit and crap drama.
That's simply moege.

Classic charage on the other hand usually don't care much about the romance at all, because it's secondary. It's usually attached at the end or beginning, but doesn't take much time so there's time for the actual character story.

As weird as it may sound, but this medium isn't actually having that much actual romance. I remember Natsukoi as a better example of how you build up a relationship, but in exchange all but one route became nonsensical. The entire common route is dedicated to build the relationship with the main heroine, and not continuing on that path is just weird. (the 5 minutes around the branching point was so weird, with the writer trying to act as if any of the other girls are a thing..)

You'll usually find better romances in works not actually focusing on the whole thing. Not always, but it's more likely. Often times, when there's actually some kinda plot happening, characters can grow more naturally together. But that pretty much requires a set in stone main heroine, which is something not too many games have either. Actually, I'd go so far and say, it's unlikely a VN without a set in stone main heroine will have a particularly good romance going.


Now, don't think that single heroine games are the solution. There's usually so little effort put into those, that they are shit as well. Some can be okay though. Like pic related, until you get to the part you pay for.

I'll make some screenshots later. It's mostly the sprites I'm talking about. The best frontal one I have on a screenshot right now is pic related, which isn't optimal either.
