That might be overthinking it. I might use the paper towel method you mentioned though since my fingers are too short to reach the end.

Yeah I do. I actually don't use soaps or any kinds of cosmetics as it saves me money. Except lube. I'm not a disgusting person either.

You can just cut off/scoop out the moldy part of food. Sure, it may still have that thin layer of mold on it still but that amount won't be enough to hurt you. Unless your immune system is awful or something.
