Even though the OG cast was made out of regular seiyuu, from the very beginning they were used heavily for promotion and built a strong connection with the audience through streams, radio, and actual live shows. Only the most rabid lunatics ever had IRL idol expectations on them, but having the representative of your favorite character turn out to be a random whore and knowing they will drag the character down to hell with them obviously ruins the fun.
