For me, the biggest reason for playing the PC98 games is appreciating how ZUN's style of game design changed as the years went by. A while ago, I 1CC'd HRtP on Hard, and at the time I thought "man, that was really fun. Why didn't ZUN make more of these arkanoid meets danmaku style games?" But then I played Lunatic. Lunatic in HRtP, for those unaware, makes it so bullets shoot out of the blocks you hit with your ying-yang orb. Every time you hit a block, a bullet shoots out at you, on top of any turrets that may be in the stage. It gets to be so difficult that some stages are actually more dangerous than bosses, just because if you don't control your ball and movements correctly, you can easily get an inescapable wall of bullets coming at you

But what I learned from playing Lunatic is that ZUN saw just how much more fun the game was on Lunatic. He saw how enthralling it was to be trying to avoid these streams of bullets coming at you. And so, all the rest of the games were straight up danmaku games

Or.. at least that's what I think, anyway. All I know for sure is playing HRtP on Lunatic was some of the most fun I've had in a while

But Anex86 is terrible. I played HRtP on that for a while before I discovered T98, tried HRtP on T98, and then never looked back. Perhaps I simply did not do some arcane optimization ritual with Anex86, but T98 seems better in every way, especially in regards to the music. Anex86 made everything sound muddied and distorted
