He was okay with implying Beatrice might have been a man, so I don't think he's too worried about alienating waifufags. Of course, Higurashi has been around much longer than when he did that in Umineko, so it'd probably have a larger effect on the audience, but it still shows he's not afraid of doing something permanent that would piss people off. Hell, we're already stuck with crazy proto-Lambda Satoko now, so it's not like characters haven't already permanently changed in people's heads.

Everything that happens in the meta world is real, it all happens in a higher plane of existence than the world of man. The world of Beato's game board is a world where witches don't exist. Bernkastel, Featherine, Lambdadelta, and the City of Books are real, as are the Inquisitors. In the game board, they are fantasy, in the meta world, they are real beings that actually physically exist in reality. Reality is controlled by cosmic witches who live in a higher plane of existence than you and could vore your entire universe on a whim whenever they feel like it.

Lambda loudly teasing you for sniffing her laundry in front of other people while you stammer and claim she's lying and avoid eye contact
Lambda noticing a nearby police officer and deliberately asking you if she should keep the love hotel visits a secret from mom just loud enough for him to hear
Lambda walking around in the backyard with her clothes disheveled and telling the neighbors she's all sweaty from playing the "tickle monster" game with her papa while hiding an evil smile
