Log onto the US kobo site -> My Account in the top right corner -> Books -> Click the three dots under one of the covers -> Download -> It'll give you a .csm file which you can just drag and drop into Calibre after having it set up to rip DRM.

I've never had to use any official app nor Adobe clients to rip/read.
I haven't done this in about a month or so but it should still work.
