well, if you want a great japanese film director, and subdued familial drama you can't beat yasujiro ozu. i'm assuming you haven't seen his films yet since you mentioned kurosawa first instead.

as for that minimalist style in maborosi, koreeda was probably heavily influenced by taiwanese new wave director hou-hsiao hsien, the originator of that style, so go check his films out. i'd start with a summer at grandpas or dust in the wind. he also made a really great japanese language film, and homage to ozu, called cafe lumiere
