Design-wise it's using the anime version, although I guess it's meant to work closer to how it does in Higurashi Daybreak or Miotsukushi, where it's almost like a real gun. In Miotsukushi, it's even said it could kill someone with a point blank shot, which is why it's good enough to give doubts to Satoko.
