>When and where did you visit?
Around 10 years ago with my family, we visited London and surroundings and most of Scotland. We did home exchange, so we stayed at (multiple) brit houses, all in cities, and there was no specific rule about shoes.
Now you're making me wonder if there was a rule, like in Japan, and they didn't tell us. Japan's no-shoes-inside rule comes from Shinto and mantaining purity right?
By the way at my house(Southern Europe) for most of the time I do not use shoes indoor either, that more cause I'm a shut-in and I do not go out often though, my mother does on the other hand.

>slippers
I use them in winter cause the floor is cold.
>barefoot
For me it's either slippers or socks.
