Seeing these two show up again was pretty out of left field, and the fact that they're literal oil princes now is way out and beyond the field. Wasn't expecting it at all. Though I honestly prefer the AoCF designs more, I feel like 17.5 on the whole will probably be remembered for having one of the stranger plotlines of the games.

Yeah, it's actually pretty tragic when you think about it. For whatever her word is worth Yukari says they're the most hated people in all of Gensokyo. Up to the end of AoCF they only really had each other to rely on because of how their powers work. So when you consider that Shion left Jo'on to tag along with Tenshi, that pretty much leaves Jo'on all alone. Now you could argue that since Shion made friends like Reimu (sort of, she crashed at the shrine for a while anyways) and Tenshi, Jo'on should be able to too. But the difference is a character like Shion is inherently able to forge relationships simply because she's a pitiable character - she's poor, she brings poverty to everybody, but she's also meek and submissive and wears nothing but tatters and carries a little plush cat with her.

Jo'on on the other hand is loud, dishonest, ornery, wears extravagant clothing and jewelry, and practically might as well be robbing people because of her powers, it's unlikely she'll ever actually manage to make friends (or a friend) like Shion can, Buddhists nonwithstanding since she both burned them and was only a student anyways. All the more when you consider she only truly wants to live modestly - while Shion dreams only of indulging in luxuries to her heart's content. It's really an interesting and, somewhat sad, contrast when you really think about the two despite none of this being overtly stated other than small little bits from the game. A minor tangent but I always thought these two had a great contrast.

To really drive the point home just look back to Shion's huge popularity back when AoCF came out, she was by far the favorite. Jo'on's had a better withstanding popularity though.
