Here's the thing. I was really indifferent about her throughout the entire series, even though she was the main character. It was interesting, but at least in the anime she didn't seem that compelling to me.

What made me start to hate her is seeing all the love around her. She isn't a great character, but passable...and people loved her because ZOMG LOLI NIPAH~ ^__^ without any actual thought regarding her position in the series. People loved the loli because she was a loli, and not for any other reason.

I'm kind of glad that Bern was a bait-and-switch. Not many people were expecting her to be outright evil and were all ready to call her the next ZOMG LOLI...my initial first reaction to her was "Another Rika...but at least she seems a bit mysterious and compelling." Then she went into full-on bitch mode...which I thought was horrible until I realized that her completely despicable personality is exactly what I loved about her. The more I tried to fight it, the stronger my feelings for her became. More to the point, I think she started losing a lot of fans the minute people found out that she really was cruel and not their generic loli princess in a different dress.
